Question New Photoshop CS3 OBJ Texture Question

    Good afternoon all!

I'm trying to intregrate the new PS CS3 3D Layers into my workflow for an upcoming project. I am working in between Max 9 and PS CS3 extended. I am following the video tutorial that DT has put up, the one with the humming bird. My first problem is that when I import a .obj file I do not get a texture along with it. Now I am fairly new to 3D and specifically Max 9. I have a file that has the UV layout stamped on it. I notice that in the DT video when the instructor selects the Humming bird obj file, the preview shows a textured model. So .objs can hold texture data? Or perhaps hold a pathname to texture files?

While I can import my obj file, I can't seem to get the 3d layer to open up the "texture" property... any ideas? I'm going to continue looking into this, I'm 90% sure I've missed something in the PS help file or something similar!

Re: New Photoshop CS3 OBJ Texture Question

Hmmm after some experimentation I found something interesting.

Using a .psd file for the texture in Max seems to cause an issue on importing the obj file.

I saved the the psd file as a tiff file. I then used that tiff file in Max 9 for the texture, exported the obj file. When I imported the obj file into PS CS3 it worked fine. So if your in Max, don't use a psd file for the texture because your obj won't import into PS CS3 with the texture.. use a tiff file instead.

Re: New Photoshop CS3 OBJ Texture Question

Im having the same problem but with Maya.

I have a .psd for my UV network and I export a Maya .obj.

I try to import the .obj using the same tut your using.

When I atempt to open the .obj in CS3 nothing comes up but a blank layer.

However, seeing that you posted on 6-20 and its now 7-3 Im guessing this is the wrong place too look for answers.

Hello James and Sicundercover! When you guys export an OBJ, are you exporting the materials as well? You'll find that under your export options and by default I believe it's unchecked in Maya (not sure about Max 9, but I'd assume it's the same).

I was think that was it at first so then I tried a export all and checked the mat box. Just to be sure I checked the folder and there is a .mat folder there.

    Anything else it could be?

Re: New Photoshop CS3 OBJ Texture Question

Ive tried exporting .obj files in many ways and I cant get it to open at all. However I have opened .obj files from a tutorial from another group and they work.

However no body and I mean nobody has posted a tutorial on the proper way to export a file for Photoshop CS3 Extended.

Why has no one responded to this? Did it get lost in all of the other posts?

Re: New Photoshop CS3 OBJ Texture Question

I posted this in "The Area" over at Autodesk. I guess some people weren't really sure of the problem they were having, and the responders couldn't properly address the question. So heres my take on it...

Hey dude, it looks like he may not have answered your question. I know that it didn’t answer mine, which was the same as yours. Anyway...It turns out that after a few brain farts I realized that a shader isn’t a texture. I repeat—a SHADER is NOT a TEXTURE!! I felt quite retarded, but not as retarded as I would have felt if just one person had emphasized this fact in all of the training I researched. Please be sure you have an actual file for you models coloring. Haven’t tried it yet, but I’m sure baking the texture from a shader would have the same effect. To test what I mean, just use any image Photoshop can open (and Maya can handle) as the color for your .OBJ then export, and open in PSCS3.

I experienced the Homer Simpson ‘Doh!’

    Have fun.
