    Future Game Worlds
I am interested in hearing theory and fact on what the game industry might look like in 5 years . What kind of advancement as to poly count for chars , living and breathing environments , real time lighting etc. What game engines do you think will be on top and which ones may fall off...Interested in all comments please

Is there a such thing as fact when it comes to something like predicting the future?

Well you got me there Dan... however I know DT is not going to just leave me hanging with that lol.

Actually still trying to make our mind up on what game engine , thought we had decided on using Unity , and not looking for any arguments , it is a fine engine however the only platform we are looking to put our game on is PC. Not looking to make a bunch of money just looking to make the game we started out to make , and for us this world needs to live and breath , EYE CANDY , dynamic weather , moving clouds , leafs blowing in the wind etc etc etc. Unity will not give us the look we need. Not with out a 100 3rd party plugins and or writing our own shaders etc.. so.. We are once again undecided , but some what leaning back towards the CryEngine 3.

caffeineadic, you and I have spoke a few times now and I sure can not argue with your response , however you and I both know I am hoping for a bit more than those very general comments

Ya, had to try some type of humor. You are actually asking that million dollar question.
It's always good to try and start that discussion though.

All you can do is stick to the main features you want in your game - and choose from there. Anything you want after that will be the team creating the functionality. I think any MMO type functionality you want, including multiplayer, via server - you will have to develope yourself; regardless of what you choose.

This is the tech avaliable now - unless you want to develope your own tech.

I agree here , just trying to get some educated guesses on where game engines and graphics might be in another five years.. I am thinking we will see more high graphic's . My interest is in MMO's of course running on the PC. And I am a big fan of Eye Candy. Of course I want a game that functions well , but I like high end graphics and detail.

I cant wait to see how well Planet Side 2 will be. Its the latest greatest mmo. I know eye candy comes with a price, bandwidth, client side PC, etc. So once planet side comes out we can take note of the quality in eye candy.
In the future as fiber networks grow across America we will see a increase of bandwidth to residential homes which will help a lot for mmo's
The normal increase in Hardware performance.

    kidding around
    Direct X 14 lol
    Windows 10 lol

Who knows what will happen. Software has come on in leaps and bounds, probably advancing much futher than hardware. I mean where are all the super computers that were predicted a couple of years ago? 5, 6, 8ghz processors and all kinds of bug numbers were thrown about around the time Avatar came out.
