April2012: Ronja Rövardotter - Ronia the Robber's Daughter

Ronia the Robber's Daughter...from one of my favorites, good old astrid lindgren

always loved this character when i was a child, not that princess little/cute/helpless disney girl..she is strong, wild and smart. Started my idea few days ago in zbrush with dynamesh, it fits very well - although i have to think about story telling details like an animal friend, familiar symbols on the clothing etc.
i'm a neewbie in maya, trying to involve it as much as i can in my progress for practicing. mainly i will work with zbrush, because i work with it for one year its much more confident.

    the first doodle, using zbrush:

    still concepting:

today i started retopo everything and sculpting a hoody ( switching between maya/zbrush):

any critics/ inspiring words or ideas are welcome!

    hi there ,

    @adeptus:
the second and third picture - the model has already new topology and i started detailing the forms, but i really love to make sketches in brush, always have detailed image in mind and it is much more easier for me to see problems in early stage - for instance often the front of a character looks great but the side looks problematic in 3d

    …and now a ronya update…

i thought about building a "graugnom" (sry couldn't find the corrsponding expression for this german word) - a special goblin from the book and let him sit on her shoulder, but i don't believe you will see much of him in an overall space of 15 cm… but that was my sketch of him (i will work on him later not for this challenge) :

build details in maya and brush:

first an overall coloring in ps to see how colors are interacting, how harmonic it'll become, for coloring i extracted the colors of a foto of a forrest :

    Attachment 8530

then roughly assigned colors to the model to get an idea for the later polypaint:

testing noise to get an idea of clothes and fabrics:

would like to hear what you are thinking about it..color/proportions/details...does it work? would you understand what she is like, fits it to her background?.....

    hi,

seems that publicing my last post in the tread needed more than one hour, but the attachements are only buffered one hour if there are not used in a post...maybe that is why there are not visible...next try:

This is friendly reminder to inform you there are 15 days left til the due date. Now would be a good time to asses your production schedule and start kicking into high gear to finish on time.

Please let us know if you are facing any issues regarding the completion of your project by the due date. Best of luck!

Re: April2012: Ronja Rövardotter - Ronia the Robber's Daughter

    long time no post..
first thanks for the kindly words DjVoyager!

for my ronya did again a lot of retopo and a finer polypaint, if theres enough time maybe will refine it again, but for now:

unfortunately had trouble translating the new posing to my model after developing the pose with mannequins in brush. but as i managed it the way i wanted i could go on creating / refining details. at least i started building the scene around, which is a part of a castle, the mattis's fort.

to explain my scene : the matti's fort is splitted in two parts by a lightning bolt on the day of ronia's birth.
a clan of robbers, the "borkas", settles the other side of the castle. birk is the only son of the enemy chief.
after teasing him with the slingshot and some nuts, she is looking straight at him, really confident about her (kind of) victory over birk.

WOW! That looks amazing. The only suggestion I have is to give her shirt a bit more color to stand out from the environment. Looking forward to seeing the end result.

This is friendly reminder to inform you there are 5 days left til the due date. If you have not already, please start moving into the post-production process, that is, texturing and lighting your model. Again, please feel free to let us know if you are facing any issues regarding the completion of your project. Good luck!

@DJVOYAGER thanks for tha advice, im not quite sure about the color too. but after a quick research found that colorful fabric was only for very rich people in the middle ages...but it is a childrens book character and they should be colorful besides that...otherwise the focus should be her head and the brown/ red hairs and she... have to find a way between

Excellent character! I remember reading the book, in Swedish, when I was teaching myself Swedish. That was years ago, I remember I enjoyed the story, but forget what it was about now. I'm looking forward to seeing Ronja finished.

@FLYNN: Try making the cloth's green more vibrant, sort of like Disney's Robin Hood. You can also try a bit of hue variation, like a mix between green and blue or green and yellow. Hope this helps.

Re: April2012: Ronja Rövardotter - Ronia the Robber's Daughter

@DJVOYAGER: thanks for the tip still trying different color variations my newest version is just the main color time to polypaint structure and detail...but first had to sculpt the tree and because it is my first tree i must say that the dt workshop wolfman really helped me make it in time, if there is enough time i will resculpt it because im not quite happy with it

@ Potatis: self teaching swedish!? respect, still struggling with english as you may have noticed if you liked the story i would recommend the movie from 1984 really good adaption of it...of course like all the other really really good lindgren movies

@ timeRemapper: really great to hear so kindly words, if i work on a model for hours and days its hard to tell if things look right.. in those moments would be good to change my pair of eyes to see it from a distance..i think thats one of the most challenging things of self teaching...but therefor we got this challenge

    so now my first tree:
