Red face Converting from poly to subD, problems

    Hey.
My name is Alf and I am new to this forum. I use Maya 8.5.

I have done most of the "Maya Modeling Techniques: Automotive".
Most of it is going well, but when it comes to converting polygons to subD I run into problems all the time! What happens is nothing. I click on "convert" and nothing happens... This is not everytime, but very often. I cant see the logic in it.
It often happens after using the "Mirror Geometry" command.
I do everything as the tutorial says and I even continue working on the project-files provided, so the actual geometry is not even done by me alot of the time.

Please help me if you can. I am afraid this might stop me in future projects of my own.

    Thanx alot.
    Alf-M, Norway.

PS: I looked around for a post for this issue and did not find any.

Hi! Try to delete your history everytime you are about to convert it; an extreme solution could export and import it back using the obj file format.

    I hope it can help

Hey Francesco, thanx for quick reply!

Problem is that I have already tried to export and import with OBJ and I always make sure history is deleted...
Have you experienced this problem yourself? Or does it only happen for a select few like me?

If you suddenly think of anything else, I would be more than happy to give it a try!

The first thing that comes to mind is there a problem with cleaning up the geometry? Is there a nonmanifold problem??? Go to polygon -- cleanup and select the options and check nonmanifold geometry selection. This could help you out. If you don't have clean geometry than this could create a lot of problems....

He is right. Try that, if it didn't work check your script editor. It usually tells you whats wrong & what you should do. I had the same problem with a different model. I looked in the script editor & followed its instructions & got the thing working.

    Hope this helps.

Thank you ALL for great feedback!
I took a look at the Script Editor and it turns out that my "Maximum Base Mesh Faces" was set too low! I feel aBit silly now, but I never knew this was an issue since I am an intermediate Maya user. I think it would be wise if this was mentioned in future training-series where poly to subD is used aLot.

Thank you all again! I am very pleased to see that this forum actually works and ppl want to help you out I am sure I will be back with some other problem, hehe...
