Yay, I just got the approval to order upgrades to Final Cut Studio! :) I'm psyched!! That means I'll get to play with Motion and play around with the new HDV camera that we just got also...anyone else played around with the new Studio?

Ya, I have the Studio. What excites me more was getting a new laptop that can run Motion!! I just learn/play so much more on the lappy as opposed to sitting at a desk!

Yeah, I'd love to get a new MacBook for my personal use and get Studio on it, but it's a lot harder when I have to foot the bill instead of having my boss foot the bill. :)

I hear you! LOL I "had" to buy a dual G5 with the nVidia 6800 Ultra, 4GB Ram and a 23" HD myself to run it!! LOL Work only gave me a 17" 1Ghz, first generation!! What a bummer, actually, I just sent it in for a fan replacement, it was noisy that's all, covered with Applecare... they said 5-7 days, I called them after 28!! I was not happy, they made it up to me with a new 17" 1.67Ghz, of course I would have settled with a 15" MacBookPro, but I wasn't going to complain!!

How is Apple's support? I haven't dealt with 'em at all, as I guess I've been pretty lucky with the tech side of things...there hasn't been anything I haven't been able to fix myself and/or just get replacements for myself and install myself. But then again, my boss usually just opts for buying a new replacement and having me install it rather then sending something in. The 5 - 7 days, or 4 - 6 weeks, or whatever the time is that's common these days is a killer when it's your workstation you're waiting on! haha!
I'm currently working on a dual-processor G4 but with Studio coming I've told my boss that I'm going to have to upgrade my computer to be able to support it. Granted, I think it's technically supposed to be able to run on a G4 as long as you have Tiger installed, it'd be terrible trying to edit HD on a G4 - which is the whole reason we're getting Studio....anyway, maybe that's why I'm so excited. We've only got one guy in-house that has a G5, so getting Studio means that my boss is going to have to get me a new system if he wants me to work on HD footage, which I have no doubt that he will!! :) Maybe I'll see if I can talk him into getting me a quad-core system...that would rock!

The quad would rock! Best of luck! The biggest thing about a G4 is the video card you have needs to be supported by Motion. I had a high end card, for the time, in my G4, but it wasn't supported by Motion. I have run Motion on 64MB cards, but it hurts!!
Apple's support is 9 out of 10 times great. Most people, with laptops, say the turn around time is 1-3 days. I know my sister has sent her iBook out twice, for "abuse" to be fixed and she's had it back the next day!! I don't know why they can fix iBooks so fast, but my "professional level" 17" took so long. All were covered with AppleCare. I was going to spend the $80 to replace the fans myself, but my boss said it's covered under AppleCare, so he wanted to take advantage. In the long run, I can't complain, but it was a long month without it! I'd say they took care of me in a big way! LOL

Cool. Yeah, one of the former co-workers of mine got Motion for Christmas (just regular Motion, not Motion 2) and he tried installing it on his computer here at work and it wouldn't install. His computer is the exact same as mine except mine actually has more memory...so I know Motion wouldn't install on my system. I'm hoping Final Cut 5 will install at least, and maybe DVD Studio Pro 4, cuz those would be nice and I can keep using AE 6.5 for compositing and such until I get my new G5...hehe
That's good about Apple's support. It's nice to know they're there if you need 'em. I'll have to look into the whole AppleCare deal when/if I order my new work system.

FCP and DVDSP should be fine on the G4. Although you did mention HD, so I am not 100%. Everything installed on my old system G4/1Ghz/1GB RAM except for Motion. Good Luck!

Yeah, well technically its not real HD. It's HDV. But still, that's more information thrown at the computer than traditional NTSC DV stuff. I know I need to upgrade my workstation before I can really edit much HDV stuff, but I just want to be able to play with the new version a little bit before I get my speed machine :)

If you want a Mac laptop, MacBook Pro is the best bet. The Ibook replacements, MacBooks, don't offer a dedicated Graphics card, 'nuff said?!? LOL I would load it with RAM, 2GB, and if it is really more for performance and graphics/video, go for the 17", it isn't great for portability, but you'll get used to, I did! ;) Maya does run, some say slow, I wouldn't say scream, but once they come out with was an intel based compiled version, it should move along quite nicely. I can't help you with color correction, I am not even sure if Shake, now $499, would help, but it might be a nice addition to the Final Cut Studio. Good Luck!

Yea, I run a macbook pro with 2gb ram. I run final cut studio. "Color" their color correction system is very nice and integrated well.
I film on the RED 4k and edit in fcp I have found it easier just to do a first light using fcp's color correction tools. If anything tricky ive ended up taking it into AE anyways.
I personally love the fact I have such a powerful tool in a laptop I can take anywhere and edit and produce on the road. Literally ive developed ad pieces while in the back seat on a road trip.
3d does take a toll. I run 3ds max. I wouldnt say its slow. But isnt quick. Its certainly quick for "a laptop".
But if your pretty efficient than wont bother most
