Hi this project sounds interesting. I want to make a reproduction of an old Chinese vase I used to have.
However does anyone know how I could achieve this texture and glaze?
Been playing around with gradients in photoshop, but it's too linear and unatural. Would like to make the colours bleed in to each other.
Thanks.

That's a beautifully textured vase, broken_rhythm. From the looks of it it might be achieved by using a layered texture, where the top layer is a transparent but shiny phong or blinn, you can use two more layers for the bottom texture, one for the color and the other for the bump. The bump itself is pretty interesting because even though there is some graininess in all of the texture only the purple parts are indented. The base of the vase seems like a texture free ceramic, though shiny. Hope this technique would help. I would suggest checking out some mental ray nodes as well.

Thanks I'll look into it.
Whats the best way to make the colours blend from purple to red? Been playing around with the ramp shaders but is'nt what i want. Also how about the blue wavey part in the middle?
Thanks again

Hi.
Here where I've got so far.
Crits please.
However i'm having trouble when i render with the vase in scene . There's this pixilated block behind. However when the vase is'nt there. Everything is fine.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

That looks beautiful!
Is that a pixelated block? It looks more like a bump texture. Do you have any 3D Texturing going on in the scene?

Ok.
Sorted that problem with the pixelated block in the previous post. Had something to do with the FG accuracy.
Anyways here's a newer version.
Thanks

Looks very nice!
The monitor i'm using right now has terrible contrast, so everything looks a bit dark to me, but from what I can see, you should put a bump map on the ground texture, and maybe bevel the edges of the box the vase is only slightly.
I'll comment about the vase later, but it looks very good!

Thanks.
I'll work on the bump map and box. Look forward to some help on the vase.

The vase material looks good but its hard to see since the middle section is so dark. It looks a bit weird because the top and bottom are visible, but the middle is dark. Makes it hard to see what is going on. Get some more light on there. Also the bottom looks a bit off as well, but I can't really tell until its a little brighter.
I really like the wall textures you have there. If you composite a picture of some background into that void area there, it will look great.

Hi so I made a few changes and got to play around with the mental ray nodes.
I left a small gap between the two doors to give the vase/scene a mysterious look and "what's beyond there?" feel.
Thanks

Sweet! You've really pulled off the glaze look of the vase. Fine detail over all. Did you hand paint the screen doors yourself?

Thanks.
I only painted the vase texture. As for the screen I got a collections of textures way back.
Thanks again. It was a real fun project and learn a lot about nodes from those DT dvds.

broken rhythm, just want to make sure if this is your final entry, right?

Yeah.
This is my going to be my final entry. I just need to do one more render - size wise. But that's really it for textures and modeling.

Great. Post it in the DT gallery and send me the link :).

Looks very nice, would work on the lighting a bit to show it off.
