Maya, by default does not export an interactive shockwave 3D file. It needs an authorware to support its models.
I do it using Director MX. You can download the free 30 day trail version here. (http://www.macromedia.com/software/director/)
Then you just need to check the Shockwave 3D plugin in Maya's Settings/Preferences. Export your whole scene or just the object to a W3D format(shockwave).
Import into Director, and then drop a pre-made interactive command on it.
Sounds a bit tedious but it's really worth it if you're trying to make your 3D models available for interaction on the web, or even make games.
Couple of examples you can check out on Director's website (http://www.macromedia.com/software/director/3d/partners/alias/)
Let me know if you're interested in using Director for interactive 3d output.

Bear in mind you've responded to a post from over 4 years ago (!) Perhaps post into a new thread? Not sure of the forum etiquettes as I'm new here.
Shockwave and Flash have come a long way. What are you trying to achieve?

Yes, you'll have better luck using Flash now, which most browsers support.
Please check DT's Flash and Maya Integration tutorials for more info.
