Hey Peops,

This is a long post, but gotta describe the issue : ) Im having some really annoying problems, but Im trying to be hopeful that Ill sort this out, as its preventing me from doing any further work. Right now Im doing lighting and software renderer works fine, but MR stumbles:

// Error: (Mayatomr) : mental ray has stopped with errors, see the log //
// Info (Mayatomr): Aborted //

...I know this is a common issue, coz I spent the last day trolling through forums all over the place to find an answer. First of all I checked the render logs, which didn't seem to have anything related to the problem (nothing referenced by date). After a lot of trying things out I re-installed Maya hoping for it to be sorted, no joy. I also checked Norton antivirus 2007 which I use and checked the program control and it only has a listing for Maya and not MR...even though MR is a standalone app...but Im not sure how WIndows perceives this. Should there be a listing for MR to allow it on everything, and if yes what file should be allowed. I know maya.exe is the maya file as theres a norton listing for it.

As you can see Ive re-installed Maya (twice), but that hasn't worked. Ive checked the "mayaRenderLog.txt" file, but doesn't seem to reference the problem, and Ive also deleted the Maya directory in docs (made a backup) and now the render logs dont even get published. There is a "mayaLog" in docs, but that just has:

Maya Message Log starting Monday, April 28, 2008

I reckon its something in my scene, coz the re-install didn't work, but the fact that it just has the error posted above and thats it, then I go to see the error log and there isn't even 1 there...thats puzzling.

Anyone know of reason/s why the log isn't there? Ive been through every question about this issue on this forum and all solutions (apart from checking my scene) dont work. I will check my scene, but the absence of the render logs is puzzling.

Cheers!

Could you post a little more detail abotu your scene?

What surface types. Polygon count, is int nurbs subd etc. Are you doing any subdivision approximation. Are you using texture maps, how many, what size. Are you doing alot of reflections and refractions. What type of mental ray settings are you using? Final gather, global illumination. Are you using lights that are emiting photons. What resolution are you rendering at?

Please send system specs.

Operating system 32 bit or 64 bit
Hard drive space left.
How much system RAM
Processor type and speed

What version of Maya and service pack install for it?

Thanks for the reply McGregs! After a lot of tedius searching last night, I came across a particle object that I didn't need anymore and deleted it and the MR renders started to work again...puzzling as the particle was hidden but yet it still causes problems. If I come across the same problem again on this project Ill provide all the info you asked for.

I was wondering though...how come that log file isnt there, even though MR was aborting and saying to look in there?
