Hello all. i have been working on my first proyect all from scratch and im having an issue with the glow on my scene.

I have a crystal ball, which i want it to be glowing from the inside out, i tested a few things out and ended up using a point light with a opticalFX node mapped into the glow propertie, now i test render it and works fine and i get my nice glow, but as soon as i turn on ray tracing for the refractions of the orb, i lose the blue glow but instead i end up with a semi transparent blue spot.

any ideas how i can make this to work? and if u guys know any other tips on how to get the effect i m looking for?,

also, another issue happens with the shadows, and the glass material where i dont get a very smooth transition. any help greatly apreciated.

ty for any insights. cheers

Hello, regarding my question, i managed to make it work using ray tracing (i m using maya software rendering) after i cleaned the scene a little. now i have a new question.

i want to use a SSS mental ray shader with a candle on the scene but i think the opticalFX node doesnt work with mental ray or i dont know how to make it work, so i was wondering if there was any workaround to use both effects on the final image.

thanks for any help

You mean to have a bit of a glow on the flame?
Try this video tutorial. Hope this works.

Sorry, the opticleFX node doesn't work in Mental Ray. You might want to check this out though:

i managed to get somewhat the effect that i was looking for using only maya software renderer, i didnt want to use mental ray because i would lose the nice glow from the opticalFX node, and i didnt feel that subsurface scattering shader was so needed for the candle.

thx for the tips, i posted one of my final renders on the members gallerie, still need more tweeks specially with the lightning, any hits greatly apreciated, im planning to use this image so im trying to get the best result possible.

ty again :)

If you have Maya 7, the new render layers makes it really easy to create different sections of the image to render. Each layer can then have a different renderer and all of it will be rendered with a single batch render command. Check out the Maya docs to help if you want to try this.
