Hi,

I was wondering how people put security settings onto their images. Sometimes when I wanted to save a photograph on the internet, it will direct me to a page saying that I don't have permission.

How does a person do that in dreamweaver? So people can look at it, but not save it into their computer?

Please let me know as I am trying to make a website.
Thank you.

Or you can do a print-screen and paste it....there's many ways around any script out there. Really the only way to have people not be able to take your image would be to put a watermark on it. Then people can take it, but it's got your watermark on it so they can't re-use it elsewhere.

Don't bother, anyone who wants to will get it will very little difficulty. Just put it on your site, and if its an art work for your portfolio of something, just put a little signature in the corner, like most artists do, and then write up a little background of it there. That way, theres no doubt as the where it came from. Also always keep the source file of your projects, at least burn them, if someone claims a piece is theres, you will have no problem proving otherwise. Usually this is pretty rare though, I haven't seen this happen at any of the major CG site, at least not seriously.

On the contrary, i have seen ways around it.
Example 1: create a rollover that changes the image completely.
Example 2: write your own function to call a different file in place of that one.
: write a function for keypress, and relation.
example: if "printscreen" key pressed, send alert, or goto
I am not sure exactly how these are writen, but i have seen these on different webpages.

As stated before dont bother there are tons of screen capture programs out there so locking the print screen button wont work as the other programs can have hotkeys configured.

Yeah, you're both correct. There are ways around getting people to hit specific buttons, but there are ways around the ways around that, etc. etc. Are you going to take the time to code in blocking every single button combination simply to protect an image? If you are really that concerned with it, just don't put the image online or make it such low quality or with watermarks so even when someone does get it, its rather pointless to have stored on their local machine. A great example of this is stock images. They want you to see the image so you can know if you want to buy it, but tons of people will just steal the image if they can so they need to have a way to make it useless for someone to use if they download it. The most common way to achieve this is with a mixture of a low-quality version and watermarks.

~This is discussion only~ I do not claim to know everything, i'm just spitting out some suggestions.
In order to completely get rid of ripping images or video from your site, you would need a program to monitor their processes. If certain processes (programs) are running, to navigate away from your page or even close their browser. Send an alert to close the programs specified, and re-enter the site. A browser security window would probably be the best wat to initiate the download, when the page tries to load, your source file for the application opens "true", if they close "false", the page is not displayed, or returns to previous page, or a blank page.

Well understood with the email, and watermark, but the issue i think is being able to display your images safely, without having to deface them yourself. Yes, you can keep other original copies, but should you really do all that work everytime? There should be a solution in the design of the site so that every image is protected without the extra effort of adding names and emails and such all over your image.
When you go to a library and look at a artists images, you ill find a small signature in a corner somewhere to establish that is his/her artwork, you don't see a big fat email across the page. I think the same concept should apply with the world wide web.
Although is it not my post, i would gladly take up the slack here as i do feel the same way about my work.

Look at some of my recent work and you'll see how i watermark my images...i have visually and hidden just in case somebody wants to sit for hours photoshopping my name out.. And you have to remember one can use a snapshot program like the one used in sketchbook...or hit print screen on my keyboard and paste in a image editing program and save it like that,so it's up to you to watermark your image

forget writing functions to disable this or that, your function will be in javascript and javascritp can be disabled.

watermarking can be re-edited in photoshop and most of all, an experienced photoshop user like me can take a snapshot of your watermarked image, and design my own and make it look a bit fanciful than yours.

forget about hiding images, just put it there.
there are loads of images online on different websites to be copied.
