There are quite a few ways of making your image planes do this. Try making a new scene and then importing the image planes. Also make sure that you don't move any of the cameras when importing the image planes.

If that still dosen't work it suggest going over each attribute in the image plane node and seeing if any seem like they are not what the original settings would be.

Thanks, Bisket. This problem was usually considered a hardware issue, and tweaking Maya's environment was not brought up in the solutions...so thanks for letting us know. Glad that worked for you! :)

I have other problem. I cannot set a grid above the image planes. I have Maya 7 version.

It must be turned off. In the workspace, click on "Show > Grid". Also make sure that on the main menu under "Display" there is a check beside "Grid". Click once or twice on these options because sometimes the grid doesnt show even with a check besides "Grid".
Hope that works.

yeah, im having the same problem. the grid shows, but not over the image plane. The grid that would be over the plane is obscured by the plane itself. I would also like to know how to set the plane to appear above the image plane. Thx for any help.

Sounds like you just need to move your image plane. Select your image plane (sometimes going to perspective view and click-dragging over the corner of your image plane is the easiest way to do this) and open up your attribute editor (CTRL+A). Once in there, check the tabs at the top of the attribute editor to make sure that ImagePlane1, etc. is selected instead of your cameraShape.

Scroll down 'til you see "Placement Extras" and there you'll see three boxes labeled "Center" (set to 0.000 by default) and right below that there's "Width" & "Height", etc. Those three boxes are, from left to right, your X, Y and Z placement of the center of your image plane. So all you have to do now is determine where you need to move your image plane to in order to be able to see the grid.

As an example, if your image plane was set up in your top camera, you'd want to move it something like -5 in the Y direction.

Hope that helps!
