i just received Maya 7 Unlimited i am pleased with it so far. i like the new modeling tools and the new per particle tools used in dynamics .. anyone else have comments?? also the Maya API has new and enhanced stuff looks like for writing your own custom shaders, tools etc etc.. which is where the power of Maya really is. Lets hope autodesk doesnt ruin it for everyone.

I skimped over the Whats new section today and have to say WoW, great release with lots and lots of cool new features, in every section of the application. I suggest to definatly take a day or two and read over whats new so you can get right to the stuff that intrest you the most. I for one cant wait to start using the new modeling tools and many of the texturing and enhanced rendering possibilities. Hope to see lots of cool images from you users out there real soon here in the gallery. :)

And make sure to read over the User Doc's its very worhty.

Hi,

I have used Maya and have been lucky enough to have used from version 5 to 7.

Every new edition has provided an improvement, but I was worried as to why within 6-9 months versions 5 to 7 were released.

Once I started 7 I realised that the releases have been in the right direction. The ability to do things via photoshop and these update automatically is great. Lets hope they don't release 7.5 or 8 and we stay stable at 7 for a wee while. ;)

I went to the Lucky 7 Tour event in Maryland the other day where they showed off some of the new features in v7. It looks pretty sweet! I love how they're starting to integrate MotionBuilder's powerful capabilities into Maya.

Can anyone tell me if there is a difference in capability between Maya 7 Unlimited and the student version of Maya 7 Unlimited? If so, what might they be? Thank You, Sincerely

In capability, there is no difference at all between a student licence and a production license.

The only difference is a legal one: student licences are for educational purposes only - they are not to be used in a commercial production environment.

also dont you have the watermark and all that? i also think the student version you dont have access to some of the features? or does the student version differ from the free trial you can download online?

The student version is different than the free version that is online...

The student version has no watermark - it is identical in EVERY way to a full commercial licence of the software. The only difference is that you cannot legally use the student version in a production environment.

Student version is about $6600 cheaper. You can pick up a student copy for $ 379.98 at JourneyEd.

If you are a student that is...

Well one would know if one would stop by your office to check. Another solution would be if one hacks your PC ;). Third possibility would be if one would brag about it everywhere but all jokes asside: I think from the mere image itself it becomes very hard for even a very trained eye to see in wich package a image was rendered in, or what software was used to create it in the first place. Most rendering solutions are now featured in other packages aswell such as mental ray wich is a standart in most 3D applications today. Let`s just hope most people will play fair and not byte the hands that feeds them.

I`ll try getting some images done asap from the new DT kit`s, but the next couple of day`s I`m a bit busy with webpage work. Stay tuned and show off some cool features if you find them folks!:D

I believe if you get caught using an educational license for commercial purposes, you get a huge fine. It's probably higher than the price of the software itself.

I have used a student version of maya 6 and 6.5 and its free to download from the alias.com website. First and important thing known to everyone is, in a student version u will always have lots banner viz. "STUDENT VERSION" all over the API or what we call it the 3d stage. So there is no question of using a student version for commercial purpose, even if u use it u will have the banner in the render too. Anyway, its illegal to use a student version for production and its also illegal to distribute the Maya Unlimited version without purchasing the exact no of licences.

There talking about the "student version" which is different than the 'personal learning edition'. The PLE will be a free download from the alias site, but the student version costs money. Only the PLE will have the banner, the student version is the same as Unlimited.

oops ! soory ... I thing i use a MAYA 6.5 PLE and its not student version.
But, does the student version allow the student to put up his/her demo reel on the web which is prepared using this package ?
If there are 3 brothers in a family who use the same PC, will maya student version legally allow 3 users to share a single student licence ?
Can u make a password protection for our profiles and files in Alias Maya 7 student version ?
Anyway ! whats new in alias maya 7 rigging ???

The student version does not allow commercial use, that means that you cannot sell anything you make with it. You can do whatever else you like.

Licenses are per computer. One license give you the right to install on one computer. you can reintall as many times as you'd like but it has to be that computer. You can set windows to have different profiles in which can all the settings and files for one user cannot be accessed by the others.

Check out the alias site for a detailed description of what is new in Maya 7. There are many things, although i'm not sure about rigging specifically, there are probably many new features.
