Everywhere on the internet it says to use DGS materials to create a reflective surface. It said to go to lighting/shading > Assign new materials and it would be there, but its not. Does everyone else have or do i have to DL it somewhere?
Thx.

First, check to make sure you have your mental ray plug-in loaded...
Go to "Window > Settings/Preferences > Plug-in Manager" and make sure "Mayatomr.mll" is loaded (if you put it on auto-load, then you won't have to reload it next time you use Maya).
Second, I don't believe mental ray stuff is under the "Lighting/Shading" tab. Open up your Hypershade (Southwest in your hotbox) then go to the "Create" menu and "mental ray Materials" and you can create a DGS material there.
Once you have it created, then you can go under "Lighting/Shading" and "Assign existing material" and you should see your DGS material in there. Hope that helps!

Sorry it took me so long to respond. I turned on mental ray, but the mental ray materials isn't there still. I think that my maya was only half-installed because none of the cloths or hairs work either.

check this out from the FAQ:

also the hair and cloth are separate modules that also need to be loaded in the plug-in manager.
