Hi,
I was wondering if anyone else is having this odd occurrence with their Max. Every time I place textures onto models, they appear to be grainy and pixelated in the viewport, but when I render an image out they come out sharp and fine.
I thought this was my unwrapping at first, but then I tested it out with unwrapping a simple cube and trying to add any random texture to a side and it still comes out grainy. I've been googling around, and it seems like there's no help from Autodesk for their 2012 Max!
Any suggestions would be appreciated

It may be because you have Realistic turned on in your viewport configuration. In the top left corner of your viewport, you should see the word Realistic. Click on that and it should bring up a menu and you can change it back to the traditional Shaded view. Some hardware has some trouble with displaying the Realistic viewport properly. Also, do you have Service Pack 2 installed for 3ds Max 2012? It might help as well.

Hi Joshua
Thanks for the reply! In my max, for some reason I don't have the option of setting it to realistic or shaded... I only have
Smooth + Highlights
Hidden Line
Wireframe
Flat
Edged Faces
For the Service Pack 2, is that a windows update or do I do update directly from Max?

Hey jembreeze! I completely misunderstood your post. 3ds Max doesn't display textures at full resolution by default, so we'll have to change a couple of options. In the Beginner's Guide to Reference Images in 3ds Max 2012 course, we talk about this issue.
If you have a subscription, you can check it out here:
http://www.digitaltutors.com/11/training.php?vid=12884&autoplay=1
Skip to about 3:36 and I'll explain how to correct your problem.
If not:
1. In the Menu Bar, click Customize>Preferences (The Preference Settings dialog box should appear)
2. Click on the Viewports panel
3. At the bottom, you should see Choose Driver. Click it.
4. Then choose your desired Display driver. Nitrous or Direct 3D, then click OK on both dialog boxes.
5. Restart 3ds Max.
If you chose, Nitrous:
1. In the Menu Bar, click Rendering>Render Setup
2. Scroll down about halfway and you should see Bitmap Performance and Memory Options
3. Click Setup
4. Check(enable) Enable Proxy System
5. Change the next drop down menu to Full. By default it says, Half.
6. Click OK, Generate Proxies Now
7. Close Render Setup and Restart 3ds Max. (Just in case.)
If you chose Direct 3D:
1. In the Menu Bar, click Customize>Preferences
2. Click on the Viewports Panel
3. At the bottom of the panel, click Configure Driver
4. Toward the bottom, you should see 2 check boxes that say, Match Bitmap As Closely As Possible. Check(enable) both of those.
5. Click OK on both dialog boxes and restart 3ds Max. (Just in case.)
As to your question about the service pack download, here's the link:

If you are running a 64-bit system, choose the second option under English. If not choose the first.

Hi Josh,
Thank you for that. I am getting a little bit of pixelation and stretching still, but that only happens in shaded mode, both for materials and viewing the viewport in shaded. Realistic mode though, looks very crisp and to the level that I want it to be.
There is just 1 problem happening now, my materials seem to be tiling by themselves, and I cannot disable it, even with my tiling at only 1.0 for width and height. Any suggestions?
Again, thank you so, so much!

I think I may know the issue but can you post a screenshot of your scene and the material editor with the tiling info?

Ok, I will post one later on when I get home! Thank you so much

Here I've stopped the tiling, but set the size to 1, and it only covers that small corner?
Also there is no preview on the material editor ball

I'm unable to view the attachment at the moment. Can you try to re-post it?

Now I can see it! Uncheck Real-World Scale, then set your offsets to 0.0 and your tiling to 1.0. Also check both boxes under Tile.

Hi,
I did that but the material preview is still kind of screwed up, and when I turn tiling off, isn't the bitmap supposed to stretch the length and width of the plane? Or is there something else very wrong. Thank you so much for your help too, I really appreciate it! Big projects coming up!

It seems like you may have used a different material type other than Standard.
Click on Go To Parent(#1 in the image), then check to see if the material type is set to Standard(#2 on the image)

If it is, try to set up another material in another material slot.

Hey Josh
I tried this and it didn't work. I was thinking maybe it was a setting might have accidentally changed so I created a brand new Maxstart.max file, but it's still tiling it for no reason. I can't get the picture to just sit on the plane as if it were a blueprint haha. I think I may try to reinstall Max..

Oh I've figured it out! I had to uncheck real world map size and it worked!! Thank you for everything and your time shared with my frustrations josh!!
