Help on animating a slinky

I was wondering if anyone could help me...I have been trying to animate a slinky going down some stairs, but it just seems to be sooo hard and i'm not getting any good results!! :help So I was wondering if anyone could help me with this.

I made a helix, it looks really good but I just cant get it to animate. I've tried a nonlinear bend deformer and tried to animate it using that but it didnt look right...what have you tried?
