I began modeling my character's feet starting with a polygon cube and extruding its faces into the foot's form. When I converted polygons to subdiv I got this!... What am I doing wrong? pls help

You have to make sure to keep faces together when doing the extrusions from the polygon in the get go. Whats essentially happening is that while your doing the extrusion the faces-vertacy points are not merged. If you keep your Head up Display on Polygon count than you can actually see how many vertacy points are selected. That way you can tell wich vertacy points need to be merged. Incase you still got history on you can select each extrude you made trough the channel box and scroll down to the entry keep faces together and type a 1 into it to enable it. In your case they should be currently off. Hope this info helped clarify the issues. Good Luck Nojoy

Hyperyon,

What version of Maya are you using?

To keep faces together permanently do this.

Maya 7 it is: In modeling menue set go to "Polygons->Tool Options->Keep Faces Together" checked.

Maya 8 it is: In the Polygon menue set go to "Edit Mesh->Keep Faces Together" checked.

You should give this a quick read, it will probably save you a lot of headache later on:

I was actually kind of suprised that Maya didn't set the keep faces together option on by default. I know that many students who are new to modeling get a bit confused with this.

They did turn it on by default in Maya 8 finally.
