Hi nikhil, I have a similiar problem in maya 8 but for me I can not get it to center on the object at all with the local/world switching..

I have heard that Autodesk offers a patch that is supposed to take care of a problem that I had in version 8. When I selected GLOBAL when extruding my manipulator would snap to the middle of the grid (0,0,0) and not my selection. I have heard it is not a problem everyone suffers with, but they have a patch on their site. I have not checked, but I am told it is available and does correct the problem I describe.

Try hitting 'w'.

12-30-2006, 05:47 PM
Hitting 'W' ? that would put me right into move tool mode right lol.. If there is something else behind hitting W can you please provide the full picture :)
cheers..
p.s I will go and do that though cause im curious why you said that lol...

Well just as i thought lol, just puts you into move tool mode, but i see what ur saying it does center onto the area you have selected.. unfortunatley if u go an hit manipulator tool it then snaps back to the stupid places it should not. mainly all the way down the bottom of your model..

Try pulling the selection while in move tool mode. It should extrude.

ewww, ur sudgeting like if i just need to extrude direction use W and then switch to R for scale lol and back to W for move and so on instead of using the manipulator tool which does it all.. ?
This must be a well known bug then, thing is i just checked 50 pages on autodesk/alias etc and just 2 entries with pathetic repsonses or no response at all... there is nothing available in the product updates/downloads area about this either...
when i come across this issue again in my next part of the model I will try using the individual tools see what happens..

Just looked into this aswell and found a small tipp tutorial on the subject ... maybe its worthy and clearifies the w option and its new behavior.

I havent tried much with maya 8 yet as I mentioned but I think this has to do with it. Just wanted to keep my promise. Let us know if it helped you out a bit. Good Luck Nojoy

No pointers as to where the file is, but is is an update for the extrude.mel. I wis I could help more, but I have quit using 8 and had no reason to get it at the time. Sorry, but I had the same glitch.

I am very pleased that it did worked. I know it frustrated me so as nobody had heard of that happening, much less to correct it.
Have a Happy New Year!!!

I think what happened is that Maya users weren't expecting to have a bug in such a frequently used tool. And of course, there is the option of world and local switching to make it more confusing. So the first thing that comes to mind is, maybe the tool's settings aren't correct (it has happened in previous versions). So we're pulling our hair trying to figure out where the installation messed up, and all this time the solution was tucked away somewhere on Autodesk's knowledge base.

Old hippie Tom,
Your a star.. thanks alot works flawless now and Im sure its fixed some annomalies some how when deselecting objects and re selecting.. that additional "Object Mode" thing is highly undesireable in a fair few things....
Ill continue with my Hand on the android tutorial dvd now.. The fellow that did that tutorial needs a medal, superb clear and precise explanations, perfect re-work when doing something new and old again and again, I can quite honestly say out of all the tutorials so far I have learnt off from online training store materials, this is the best so far. Perfectly suited to how I like to be shown..
Kudos to you ...
Wonder what i should get next ? its been a while since i dove in my pocket..
Cheers,
Saratoga..
P.s didnt check yet but is there a sticky locked thread in forums anywhere for hosting info for little known problems like this ? would really help alot of people i think.. you could just keep it locked down and add brief info and links now and again when someone discovers something of major use to us all..

I am happy that it helped!!! I see a few people suffer the problem, but not enough have it happen and many think it is a preference problem, at least from what I hear. You may see a post sometime and help another that struggled for a month on it.
The tutorials from DT are the BEST, and the staff that is always here, well maybe not on Christmas. They have alot of knowledge, as you can see!! I found that doing the Photorealistic Car Modeling and then the Modified Street Kit taught me more than any tutorial had up to that point. But that is me, and I did learn alot!! Especially about Sub-D.

Nice job Saratoga. I am sure it was good to get back to modeling and not fighting the extrude tool. When you finish you should post a nice shot of Alexia in the Gallery.

I have been using 8.5 for awhile, and haven't seen that you need it. Not had that same problem with 8.5.
