I did my first today, this is how I did it.

1. Create image with alpha channel in photoshop.
2. Create nurbs plane in Maya
3. Assign a lambert to the plane and a psp file texture to the color of it
4. Make sure you have the correct ps layer selected in the drop down list
voila

The reason I used a nurbs plane is that you don't have to mess with uv's.

Hi Chard,

What kind of file format are you using for your texture map?

Make sure you have an alpha layer created in the Channles pallet in photoshop. You can create one by clicking new layer. Then just do a ctrl+click on the layer of your image in the layers palet. Then go back to the alpha channel and hit alt+backspace to fill the selection with white.
Anything white represents what will be seen and anything black will not.

Save it out as a tiff, tga or png

If you have the Maya iff plugin installed you can save it as a iff also.

Like colicoid mentioned above, you can also save you psd file and use it too. Only in Maya 7 and above though.
