Well Renderman is the best. Very hard to grasp and understand though. They use it in almost every big movie production.
Renderman for Maya - is a dumbed down version of Renderman. It is cool but I find it sometimes doesn't work well with certain things in Maya.
Maxwell Render - This is a very accurate light renderer. It has some cool materials too. Prepare to waist your life away waiting for the renders to complete though. I recommend this only for nice still shots. And even then it will take forever.
Mental Ray - Comes with Maya and many other 3D packages. It is the most integrated renderer with Maya. I love Mental Ray because most everything works with it in the package.
VRay- This is a very good renderer for 3DS Max. Very easy to use and renders pretty fast.
Brazil - Another good renderer. I don't know much about it though,That is for the Max Gurus to explain. I hate 3DS Max.
Turtle - Looks very promising for video game rendering. Haven't tried it yet.
Final Render - Looks cool. Haven't tried it yet.

hi
i have recently been messing about with the demo of turtle,a and i must say that i believe that one is the best because it is the fastest renderer on the planet.
I had a scene that i was messing around with and AO with MR took minuites while Turtle took seconds. i have always thought the the bump/displacement was slow in MR it is rapid with turtle, and with microPolys the detail is amazing.
I expect now it may be going through you mind, yeah, speed is great but what about quality, well with the SSS/FG/ and surface transfer the quality is definitely there. If u want to try it here is the link

Turtle is not only used in games either so it holds up with the best of them IMHO
Good luck in choosing, its a hard one :)
