that will happen every single time you ever use front and side references. There's really nothing you can do about it unless you draw the references yourself. Just try to find the spot that matches all the blueprints as best as possible and you will be fine. The few mms of difference will not make a difference to the model, so basically you just have to get used to doing the best you can with the references.

The Photorealistic Car Modeling in Maya does go over setting up image planes in maya, but it already has the images for you and you import them into maya. If you want to draw your own references you should start by looking at how engineers draw orthographic drawings of front side and and top in so called "engineering drawings". Its also known by other names so try searching for working drawings and technical drawings as well. But trust me, its a lot easier to just learn to make do with the inconsistencies in the references.

Exactly and not to worry about total precision up to the single mm. In these cases where the images dont quite match totally I tend to stick to one of the modeling views (image planes) heavily - the others I use as reference. I also sometimes try to adjust them inside of Maya afterward. Usually a little movement matches them up good enough. Hope this helps a bit aswell, and as Laxman suggested I would look into the Photorealistic Car Modeling Kit wich was my favorite Kit for maya that I have ever layed my hands on, its fantastic training in many areas of maya. Good Luck ;)
