I'm lighting a shot and followed the tutorial on the Mental Ray for Maya DVD. I set up a dome and found a great HDR forest image that really works with the scene. My question is, how do I add lighting in on top of the HDR lighting? I know that you can increase the color gain on the image to brighten the scene, but I really need a rim light to mimic the sun to match the background plate. I have to crank up the lights to massive amounts and it barely even shows up.

You can add normal lights in combination to the dome lighting. Just make a spot light or something and first try just placing it where you want. Then play around with having the light emit photons and also unlink the light from everything else so you can crank the intensity up.

Cool thanks. I added photons to the light and suddenly started seeing results. One last thing... my camera and light widgets are so small in the viewports I can barely see them much less select one without the Outliner...how do I make them bigger again?

I don't think you can, if you scale the camera of a light i'm pretty sure that i will actually affect it. I know it will for a light, but give the camera a try. One solution would be to create something like a locator, a curve or even geometry and then parent it to the camera or light so when you select the locator you could press up or down on the keyboard to select the camera. I usually select the camera by having a viewport open so you could go to the first menu in the viewport(forgot what its called) and press elect camera.
