I made a thread a week or so ago here that I had called "Kyle's Kitchen". I deleted that thread though in favor of starting a new one with a better title. :D
Basically, I watched the "Rendering Interiors in Mental Ray and Maya" training video and decided I wanted to try to replicate that in Softimage.
Unfortunately, the IES lights (the mia photometric light) don't seem to translate well, technique-wise from Maya to Softimage, plus I ran into a whole host of other problems trying to follow along with it in Softimage, which in most ways is drastically different than Maya, even though they both use mental ray.
So I just decided to do my own thing with it, based as well as I can on things I've learned here from DT.
I've changed quite a bit about the kitchen, added a few new objects, re-worked some others, and UV mapped most of the objects for (later) texturing. And I never did like track lighting so I made it recessed lighting instead.
This render here is now that I almost have the basic lighting set up.. almost. Needs work though.
And I haven't gone out of my way to finish materializing much of it since I just wanted to get mostly the basic colors in to get the lighting straight before I move on to making better materials and applying textures. Almost everything is using the mia_material_x.
I also haven't gone to any great lengths yet to AA it or give the shadows more samples or crank up the irradiance particles. It's just a rough draft to show the lighting. This is the WIP for the "night" scene, and I want to do a daytime scene as well after this is finished.
Not sure what the deal is with the artifacts on the blinds against the far wall. It's either moire pattern from not enough AA or some other strangeness.
Looking for suggestions on how to make the lighting better. :)
I know this isn't any major landmark in arch-viz rendering, but for me it's a huge advancement. If you saw my previous architectural renders you'd see what I mean. ;)
