making the finish animation be an a .mov,mpg

ive finished up my animation in maya 8 and i dont know how to save it in or render it in a mov,mpg format pls help

Well you need to do a batch render so Maya saves all your frames one by one in an image format, for example jpg, tga, iff, etc. So if you have a 300 frame animation, you will need to batch render out 300 images. You then need to take these images and put them through a compositing package (After Effects, Combustion, Premiere, etc.) to render out an avi, quicktime movie, etc.
Unfortunately Maya is not very good at kicking out .mov or .avi files straight out like other programs (Max, XSI, etc.) so you need to work around the limitations as I described above. Good luck, hope it helps.

That should give you a good idea of how to set up the render. After that render it and do what jak suggested.
