I am trying to use Shave to make animated grass, like reacting to wind, but i can't get it done as the manual describes: "just add the field and the hair will react to it"
I did add the field and reran the shave dynamic, but nothing happened.

I check the dynamic relationship, I can't connect the shave node to the field.

Any help will be appreciated. I am quite a newbie :frown:

For a Field to affect the hair, you first need to set the location for the STAT files to go to, kinda like how Realflow works.
So first create a field. Ignore the warning error.
Select the hair and go to Shave > Shave Globals.
Under Dynamics, set the location of the stat files from "Browse".
Now go to Shave > Dynamics > Run Dynamics.
It's gonna start buffering and might take a while, but that's okay cuz it's just recording the affect of the field on the hair in the timeline.
When it's done, you can easily do a realtime playback and see the field affecting the hair.
Hope that helps.

Hi, thanks a lot for ur reply
but strange, that's exactly what I did.
I even started something very simple like 10 hairs to test.
and I set the location,
then run dynamics.
I did see the hair react to gravity.
But it didn't react to any field I put in at all.

Did I miss something??

Oops, my bad, sorry it's "Run Dynamics All nodes".
For testing sake, use an Air field instead of Gravity because the hair is already gonna be pulling down on its own. Also use a smaller timeline because as soon as you'll run the dynamics it's gonna start on the playback.
Hope that works.

Hey it works! :laugh
I found I didnt run all nodes everytime and also I thought the initial magnitude is enough.
Beginner's bad luck :P
But thanks so much !

BTW, how can I make seaweed motion?? any idea?

With Shave? It's gonna be a long render time. But if you're up for it then apply Air field to the hair, that's positive on the Y axis, with a bit of sway on X and Z axis (use half of what you put in Y). The most important part would be to make the hair look like a sea weed, so make sure that you have a good thickness. That's how I'm guessing you'd achieve a seaweed motion. Personally, I'd go with the PaintFX weeds. They're faster to render and already come with the motion attached to them :)

hi i am using shave and haircut 4.5 v41 and i am getting an error on my maya 8.5 win32 bit everytime i reopen the file. I also lose all my shave information on the object, but i can still see the shave node on the outliner. Is it possible to recconect it again. if so how?
thanks

Hi vfxkido. Please make a separate chitchat for this issue so we don't get different topics jumbled up. Thanks :)
I've run into that issue before. Make sure you are opening a file that uses a shave node made with the same version of shave you're running. Also, try importing the file instead of opening it. If these don't work, it's best to contact Joe Alter on the subject.
