I have created a maya scene file complete with mental ray etc. (thanks for the wonderful training dt provides  ) and wonder if i can export it as a 3ds max file a classmate wants. Will the textures etc get exported correctly? and if i set some settings like final gather, global illumination etc. will he, in 3ds see & render it correctly?

Thanks for the great community here. I've exported the files, hope the classmate who wants the file can open it. Thanks

If he has a newer version of Max, you'll be fine. For future reference, Autodesk has a free FBX conversion utility on their site so if you wanted to you could take that FBX and convert it directly to a .3ds file.
