View Full Version : Connect insists on triangles instead of quads?

I'm going to try once more to get help from this community, although so far this community has proven to be rather useless...

I'm trying to follow the tutorial for 3ds Max basic modeling, and when it describes using the Connect tool to divide some quads it makes it appear that the tool will divide an existing quad into two quads. But that's not what happens when I use the tool. It takes the existing quad and divides it into an inner loop that is made up of quads and an outer loop that is made up of triangles. I even went back to v 2010 and it did the same thing. But the tutorial shows the Connect tool dividing the existing quad into two quad loops (which makes more sense). Is there a configuration option I've missed or something?

The fact my 3ds app insists on behaving differently than the example means that I'm dead in the water as far as following the tutorial. Any help would be appreciated.

Fourteen views but no replies. *Sigh*

Maybe I need a more attractive avatar. I'm thinking maybe Amanda Seyfried.

Anyway, the Connect tool only divides the quads into triangles when you're an angry drunk on a lonely Friday night stupidly selecting not only the looped edges but the perpendicular edge that connects them. Sobriety and/or a pleasant disposition fixes the bug.

Cb
when you use have edge faces switched on and you select and edge example top edge and a bottom edge you run the connect then you can connect lines through your mesh you can add segs, pinch, side, move them up or down pinch them together side them together. I am not sure what your trying to do with your model can you give more detail?

As i am the only one who helps here i cannot answer all the threads if i did then i would not get my architectural building done for my clients!

Hi croberts! I apologize for the delayed response; your post must've slipped through the cracks somehow. Here's a quick video going into a little more depth on how to get the Connect command to give you nice quads as well as helping you understand why it might give you triangles instead of quads depending on your selection. Hope it helps!

Here's a link to the Introduction to Modeling in 3ds Max (http://www.digitaltutors.com/11/training.php?pid=3551) course that was referenced in the video.
