View Full Version : What's a good order to train with?

Greetings, and thanks in advance for reading!

I've completed most of the Introduction to Maya 2nd Edition, and I'm learning a huge amount in a relatively short time. I am wondering if anyone had any opinions on a long-term order for learning / using these DVDs.

When I did a search, I found that most people were recommending that a new Maya user stick with modeling for a while, then move on to learning the intricacies of rendering or animation. This makes sense to me, and I enjoy modeling way more than texturing right now -- I think most of that is due to my lack of experience in Photoshop.

What is a good training order to continue with? Should I stick to modeling for awhile? If so, which one should be next, and why? What comes after that?

I want to become at least a capable user of Maya -- meaning that, I want to be able to, in the future, sit down and create models and scenes with a high degree of comfort and ability. Later I would like to be able to texture and render them with decent results.

My goals for using Maya aren't very specific; I don't plan (currently) on using it for a career, but I want to become proficient enough to model just about anything that a hobbiest could model. I'm willing to let it take as much time as it needs to, but I'd like to be fairly proficient / comfortable within a year. Is that possible, assuming I spend at least two hours per day, every day, with Maya, and most of the weekends?

Finally, what other training DVDs for Maya are recommended that don't happen to be Digital-Tutors products? Any video-based training would work for me, but not "real" classroom training. I've had enough of classrooms. Has anyone tried that expensive 3D Buzz set?

Sorry this was so long, I just want feedback on how to get a decent education that I can apply to Maya to create some fun scenes, characters, cars, spaceships, logos, architecture, cartoons -- you name it, I am interested in it.

Thanks again for reading!

Check this page out, it will give you a good idea of what availible.

I would first go to the Car modeling kit, then the female android kit, then the polygon and sub-d modeling kit. That will give you a good background in modeling, and will introduce rendering. The last one will get you started to go with UV mapping and the texturing and more rendering.
