Hi everyone,
I know that previous versions of Maya have had problems rendering out sub d surfaces in Mental Ray. Does anyone know if this has been addressed in version 8? I just tried rendering a sub d object tonight in mental ray Maya 8 and I'm getting a completely black screen.
Thanks.

If you render the same shader on a NURBS or poly surface does it render fine? If not, its probably something with the shader settings.

Hey danlefeb,
Thanks for the reply. Yeah I tried rendering out a simple poly cube and Maya sees it. Once I put in the sub d object though...nothing. I just ended up using the Mesh>smooth function and got it to render that way. Poly count isn't an issue in this case.
But back to my initial question though: is Maya 8 optimized to do
mental ray renders on sub d surfaces? Or is autodesk simply marching lock step with what Alias did in the past?

Hi, according to Autodesk Maya 8 now supports the rendering of Maya subdivision surfaces and creases. You should be having no problems. Check and make sure you're not doing something wrong perhaps with your render techniques or shader networks.

Thanks for clarifying that Jak.
Say are you the same Jak_Carver over at the Crytek forums?
