When I hit 5 and go to shaded mode, then select a face, it gets properly highlighted in an orange shade.
However, after I go down to my front and side views and bring in image planes, this no longer works.
(I can select the face, and see an outline of it in orange for wireframe mode, but no orange face in shaded mode)
If i use ctrl+z to undo the importing of the imageplanes I still have this same problem. It lasts until I restart Maya. How do I fix this?
Also, is there a way to change the color so it is something other then orange? Thanks in advance
Edit: This is in Maya 8.0

So are you restarting Maya everytime as a workaround everytime you work on your scene? Or are you at a stopping point until you get this issue resolved?
You can try deleting your preferences and restarting Maya. Maya will rebuild a new pref folder for you. Try that and see if it clears up your problem.
(Also check the shading options in your pull down menu. I have to have hardware texturing selected in order to see my image planes in each view.)

Well each time I load up Maya and make a quick polygon object and test it, the faces are outlined in orange for Wireframe mode, and highlighted in orange for Shaded mode...
but when i go file > open scene and open the scene im working on, again i can not have highlights on the selected side durring shaded view =/

Did this started happening recently or was it from the beginning? It just might be that your graphic card needs updating. You can also try setting the Maya's preferences to default.
As for the colors change, go to Window>Settings/Preferences>Color Settings. Here, you can change all the colors of Maya. Word of caution: Don't go overboard with changing colors if you're not 100% sure about something, otherwise it will get very confusing following tutorials etc.

It's the first time I've seen this problem.. but then again I havn't used Maya 8 too much thus far... never saw it in my version 6/7..
zooming in and out also lags me a little.. [Not sure if theres a way to choose between DirectX and OpenGL in Maya as in some other programs.. not that I'd be sure which is better.]
Reseting preferences didn't work =/

Maya's an OpenGL based application. Have you tried updating your graphic card? There are some issues with display in Maya 8's workarea that weren't in previous versions...nothing that can't be fixed with some manual adjustments. But IMHO, it's not that great of an upgrade from Maya 7. Still, if you want to go ahead using 8 make sure to update the graphics card as well, and hopefully you're not using an ATI.
