Seems like a graphics card issue. Does this happen in all of the scenes? Click on "Show > All" in the perspective view panel. Still even if it were off the translate tools should show.

I'm almost certain it's a graphics card issue. I used to have this problem with my old ATi Radeon card, and I switched to an nVideo GeForce and the problem went away. I think maya has some problems with Radeons... are you using one?

Yup, the only ATI Maya is cool with is FireGL. In any case, you say you've got too many files on the machine...that should'nt affect Maya's process though defragment the HD for some breathing room just in case.

I had that problem on my old ATI card as well. No rotate handel and the move tool didn't have arrow, only lines.

I think (don't quote me on this) it's because ATI cards (except for the FireGLs of course) are geared twoards DirectX, while nVidia Cards are geared towards OpenGL (or maybe just both)... and Maya (I think) uses OpenGL... whereas video games usually use DirectX, which is why the ATI cards are set up for it.

Couldn't have said it better myself, Twinsen, thanks :)
Good luck with your card, cachmap.
