I've purchased the DVD and I've been following along with building the jet bike, and I'm stuck on a part, and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Im building the rear pipes, and I'm at the point where I need to shape them. When I select my CV's and try and move them up or down or out, it really distorts the Nurbs cylindar. Almost looks like a pipe with lumps instead of a smooth flowing bend. In the dvd, the authors pipes seem to shape nicely. I have checked to make sure I'm selecting all the CV's in the section, and I am.

I have included some links to screen shots of the right way, and then what mine looks like. Please help :)

It looks like your surface isn't smooth so start by hitting 3 on the keyboard. Also you may need to move the two rows on either side of the one you moved to get a smoother shape.

Let me know if that works.

Thanks for responding Papa. I took your advice, and made sure the smoothness setting was on 3, and I tried to select 2, and 3 set of vertices at a time to see if it would change, and it didn't. Still getting the black mishaped bends.

I just noticed something after leaving this last post. When I right click to select vertices, my option is for "control vertices", not just vertices like usual. Could that be a problem?

Try doing Edit NURBS -> Rebuild Surfaces -> ■ then checking Keep: NumSpans then click Rebuild.

take one of the pipes, export it and zip it. Go ahead and attach it to this thread and I'll look it over.

hi I had a quick look at your pipe and I didn't find anything wrong with it......do a render to see if it stays that way or you have by some reason changed a setting in maya but I can say that there is nothing wrong with your pipe

steel you're right. when i render the frame it looks fine. It's strange because I've completed almost the whole model (except the pipes) and in modeling view it all looks fine. Only these pipes are looking bad. Thanks for the tip.

if it's looking different in the render, it probably has something to do with your render tesselation being fine but your in-view tesselation not. You can try in the attribute editor going down to tesselation and turning on "view render tesselation" so that it doesn't look ugly.

no problem...always happy to help

don't forget if you run in some more problems like this, where your objects looks strange and you don't know why.....often it's only in modeling view, not in the render.

and papa sorry I stole your thunder but I wouldn't know this much if it haden't been thanks to you and everybody on DT.

keep up the good work ;)

I appreciate everyone's help. These DVD's have been well worth the purchase. The introduction to Maya video has taught me more in a few hours then the hundreds of dollars i spent in books. I love the idea behind this site, keep em coming!

No thunder stealing at all. Thanks for helping out. That is what I love about our community and group of artists who call DT home.

It looks like it could also be a graphics card issue.

which card do you have? ATI cards are good, its just that their drivers suck. That might change though because ATI got sold to AMD. It used to be the 5th biggest technology company in canada I think:(

If only they were compatible with Maya properly...
