What's the best way to do eyelashes for animation--blinking etc? Paint FX creeps me out.

just make a plane. Then make it a soft body and use some springs to get the tips to move slightly, but not the part attached to the eye. Then apply a hair texture with a transparency map.

Yikes! I forgot I posted this.
I have come across the alpha map method in a book--but I was thinking about actually individual hair methods--like geometry. Not extruding from the lids though--since i am using polys and dont have the detail for for it. I wasnt planning to rig the eyelashes for movement--just have them follow the lids. in blinking. Eventually I would want to have the eyeball moving under the lid too.

I havent done facial rigging yet--was thinking about making the lashes from nurbs and parenting them to the lid joint(one joint for the upper lid, one for the eye, and one for the lower.

Just wondered what other methods there are for realistic characters.
