I somewhat understand the basics of a render farm for Maya, but have no clue for setup for shake.
I do know you have your render nodes and mental ray for Maya.
Can you miss and match hardware, APPLE and Windows??
I'd like a setup for Mental Ray as well for Shake...
thanks,
shane c.

Knight,
You can mix and match hardware with no problems with Render Farm software. I currently have a small 6 node farm setup 3 of the boxes are OSX 10.4 with 1 Server 2003 and 2 WinXP pro machines. I use Render Pal software to manage the farm. http://www.renderpal.com. If you only need your OSX boxes to render shake scripts then Apple QMaster is the easiest and cheapest way to go. I have Apple QMaster setup to rendder shake and Final Cut Pro on my 3 OSX servers of the farm plus QMaster is so easy to setup I can add 3 of the OSX workstations if I need them rendering as well.
If you are talking about Mental ray for Maya (the builtin version) then Render Pal is super intuitive to setup and configure. They have a great walkthru ( online only) and a decent forum.
Hope this helps. :)
