cut tool?

hey, i bought a polygonal modeling book the other day and it said its a guide for maya and 3ds max. there are parts that say to cut something but i never heard of a cut tool in maya. im thinking it must be for 3ds max but my question is, is there something similar to a cut tool in maya?
it said for maya and max so im curious to where the cut tool is.

Hello Hard Drive. There is a Cut faces tool in Maya, which you can find easily in the Polygons shelf. The icon has 3 faces in it and one face is lighter than the other two. They could possibly be referring to this tool.

by cut they probably just mean the split edge tool (under edit polygons)

Cut and split do different things. Split adds one edge at a time, where cut adds edges all across the geometry. It'd be similar to adding subdivisions on a poly cube, for example. They both can be found under the "Edit Polygons" menu -- "Split Poly Tool" and "Cut Faces Tool" about three blocks under the split tool.
