Hello y'all,I am new here
Can anyone please explain to me how to project a human face using UV mapping before going to photoshop. Can the 2D canvas in Maya also be used to render such UV maps?
Thanks.

its a pretty complicated procedure. There are some free vids here which show you the basics, but the best thing to do would be to check out this kit, it'll teach you all you need to know to get started making things like these.

I just recently finished doing a digital double and had to uv map the head
for the model. I pretty much used the planar mapping option in Maya to do the head, but broke the head up into several sections: along z - front and back, along x - side, along y - top, then did a short cylindrical section for the throat. Essentially what you want to do is create uv maps with the least amount of distortion when you export them out to Photoshop. The auto map function can get you somewhat down that path but I've found that the resulting uv map leaves a lot to be desired.

You end up doing the different sections, and just use the stitch and move function to sew your resulting shells together before taking your uv snapshot.
