Major issue with rig from guide...

I realized that my cat model was rigged incorrectly after spending considerable time weight painting. So, when I go back to a previously saved version of my model, prior to creating the rig, and adjust the guide and then do "rig from guide" I get very strange results. The ear and tail are going in strange directions. I have tried it from earlier saved files (I have saved numerous iterations of my project on an ongoing basis. I get similar results every time. So, I decided just to create a new rig on a new scene and just rig from guide on that. I also got mysterious results. This is very frustrating.

I am rebooting my computer and relaunching... Please advise if you have any insight.
