Hey everyone,

I want to buy a custom built computer dedicated to 3d modeling and rendering hyper realistic animations in Mental Ray. I was wondering if anyone knew what key hardware specs to look for when building a computer specifically for 3D modeling and rendering? What effects render speeds the most, CPUs, Ram or Graphics Cards? I need help figuring out what’s necessary for a fast rendering computer.

Do a search on the forums, the topic has come up several times.

Basically:

Render speed: CPU
Render complex scenes: RAM

Ability to view complex scenes: Video Card

If you want to render nice MR stills, get a Conroe Core 2 Duo; these are extremely fast and can beat even dual Xeon workstations by a good margin. If you want to render out MR realistic animations, your gonna neeed a render farm; a custom biult computer will do you no good unless of course you have no problem rendering a 5 minute sequence for like 3 months. Of course this depends on what your rendering, but your looking at numbers close to that and beyond. Just something to think about, good luck.
