View Full Version : TGA's and JPEG's not reading in Photoshop

Hi all,

So I did a short batch render of my scene and selected TGA as the file type in my Render Settings panel. Maya crunched the numbers, and spat out the files. When I tried opening them in Photoshop, all the files were grayed out. When I tried double clicking them, I got some prompt that said "cannot read file."

I tried a batch test again this time selecting JPEG as the file format. Same result. Is there something that I'm not selecting in my Render Settings panel that's causing this?

I can open the files in my render view, save them out to the appropriate format there, then open them in PS but that's a pretty lame workaround.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Go to presets->load presets->default setting (in the render globals) . Did you tell it to render RGB (check box) seems like it is only doing the alpha.

Hey lax,

I did what you suggested in the render settings menu and set it to default. I didn't find a selection for RGB though. Is there another panel specifically for "render globals" or is the render settings panel the same thing?

I wrote Autodesk about my problem and tech support wrote back saying that I should rename or delete my preferences file. I ended up renaming my pref file, but I still end up having the same issues. :frown:

Anyone else have any suggestions? Thanks.

Renaming the preferences will force Maya to recreate them when you launch it again, thereby rolling back to the default settings. You may want to do the same sort of thing for Photoshop. This can be done by going into

C:\Documents and Settings\USER NAME\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop\VERSION NUMBER\VERSION NUMBER Settings and renaming the "Adobe Photoshop CS2 Prefs.psp" (or whatever version you have) file.

Are targas and JPEGs the only image formats you're having problems with?

Hi danlefeb,

Thanks for the reply. So far I've tried targas, jpegs, and tiffs. I keep getting the same prompt about not being a format that's supported.

I'll try resetting my prefs in PS like you suggested then post back.

Ok so I renamed my prefs folders for both PS CS2 and Maya 8. Did a batch render and had the machine crunch out 1 frame rendered in Mental Ray. I had it set to render out a JPEG.

When I quit out of Maya and took a look at the file, I noticed that Maya rendered out 2 files - one that has a PSD icon (the blue quill over a blank sheet) and a PAINT file (has the icon of the paint brushes in a glass). I don't know why it rendered out 2 separate files like this.

The paint file opens fine in Paint. The supposed PSD file is giving me the same error "unsupported format" blah blah blah.

I'm pretty p.o'd at this point having spent the better part of the night trying to figure out what's going on with this software. Heading to work now.

Anyone feel free to jump in on this if you have an idea...any idea.

Thanks. PM :frown:

What are the extensions of the two files? (To turn on extensions, go to Windows Explorer and then Tools > Folder Options > View Tab and uncheck the "Hide extensions for known file types")

Are you able to view other PSD, JPEGs, TIFFs, TGAs, etc. in Photoshop that are from anywhere but Maya?

Hi danlefeb,
I'll do that first thing when I get home tonight and post back.

I just upgraded to Maya 8, and wasn't aware of this issue since everything I was doing up to about a week ago was still work. I was using the render viewer to do simple renders from my perspective view, did "save as" and usually saved the resulting stills out as a tiff or jpeg. These opened up in Photoshop CS2 fine.

Now that I have to do a small animation, I'm having this problem.

Hi Jak,
Thanks for the assist. As soon as I get home I'll shoot you a copy.
It's really simple. Just some text that I created over a plane, rendered out using mental ray.

Jak, once you resolve the issue please post what the result was so that others that may be experiencing similar problems can see what the fix was. Thanks!

Windows Explorer? Are you talking about the OS for my computer or Photoshop? I'm running Windows XP Pro and I can't seem to find anything that says Windows Explorer. Ditto for Photoshop.

As for your second question, my copy of Photoshop has no probs opening up other jpegs, gifs, etc. that were not generated out of Maya.
One thing that I did notice though. On other PS docs, usually there is grey text that says PSD at 50% opacity over the blue feather icon. With the problem files generated out of Maya I only see the blue feather. No PSD or JPEG or TGA etc.

Windows Explorer is the name of the program that opens whenever you go to "My Computer" or "My Documents" or anything like that. It explores Windows. :-)

hey all!, i've had photoshop bug out on me before, usually re-installing photshop is the best option, my photos wasn't loading at all, from any source....so try re-installing, it helped me, you can try the repair option first, and if that doesn't work do a full re-install, and to be on the safe side

Important!!!

just so you don't think it's just maya, download a jpeg from the internet and try to open it in photoshop if same problem it's photoshop, if not it's how your saving it in maya!

Thanks danlefeb,

I figured out what my problem was. Turns out when I was rendering out for JPEGs or TGA's etc. I had selected "name.#" instead of "name.#.ext!" It didn't matter whether I selected JPG or TGA because I had neglected to give all the files the .ext flag! Sheesh! I love Maya but man, sometimes it just gives you too much control over stuff!

Your suggestion about Windows Explorer clued me in because it spelled out right there in black and white the file name and the number in the sequence but no file extension when I looked them up. Other PS files from other projects or stuff I dl'd from the net showed the appropriate exts.

Once I did that, the files read fine in PS! Duh for me!

Thanks everyone who helped me out! This forum rocks! :headbang:

Glad to hear it works now! I always keep my extensions showing for reasons just like that one. :)
