I am trying to create a realistic lighting environment in maya. One of the problems I am having is that maya doesnt have any built in solutions for out door lighting. In 3dsmax there is a "dome" light and also a sky light which greatly help in this procedure. Also in 3rd party renderers like VRAY and brazil there are more added environment lighting solutions.

There must be some sort of workflow in maya to easily get nice outdoor lighting results, if anyone has any ideas or knows of any plugins or better suited renderers please let me know!

hi

The MR DT training kit is a great place to start if u havent got it but, a way that i like to do it is create a ramp in an inverted sphere, with a light sky blue at the topand a daker gradient to the bttom with a couple more inbetween with slightly lighter and slightly darker blues,

With that created detctch it and connect it to the ambient colour and map the sphere with a cylindrical map so the gradient is going from bottom to top of the sphere.

then activate the MR FG and render away

If the scene is too dark increase the Value of the colours in teh ramp.

This does gove u a soft look but is not necessarily the most interesting that u may get with something like a HDR map

Hope that helps and let me know how u get along
