Hey I'm trying to put glowing lights on my Frigate, I know you can't use glow effects in renderman so i used a maya software overide.
The problem is that when i bring the maya shader to the top you can see the light from the otherside of the frigate. How can you make the light disapear behind objects when the lights render layer is higher than the objects.
I had this same problem trying to render a moter boat in a maya ocean.

If it's an animation then you'll have to use a compositing application to mask out the area that you don't want to show up. I prefer to use After Effects. It works on the same principle of layers. Renderpasses are great but sometimes there are objects that need complex settings to render, thus CG artists use compositing apps to resolve these issues faster. You can even apply the glow on the lights in After Effects, but they woud still have to be in a separate layer.
For an ocean scene where the boat is bobbing up and down, there will be three layers. One is the background ocean, middleground is the boat and then the foreground ocean.
Hope that makes sense :).

When you do, be sure to check out the free online DT tutorials on After Effects. They'll get you comfortable with the application in no time :)
