I'm having a weird problem when working on the "Building Up Thickness for the Car Parts (part 2)" of the DVD. When I select all of the edges around the front fender and try to extrude the edge in order to add a sense of thickness to the part, Maya extrudes half of the faces in one direction and the other half in the other direction. I tried to move the edge with the modifiers set to both world and local modes. Am I missing something from the tutorial? Maybe the narrator is doing something that he doesn't vocally say (keystroke or something nonvisual)?

If I'm not making any sense, let me know and I can try to get a screenshot of it tonight. :D

Check to make sure the faces are the same direction, screen shot would be nice, first guess would be that the manipulator is not set to local.

Attached is a screenshot of what is happening to me. Any ideas? I don't know how to check which direction the faces are facing. I am following the DVD exactly (at least I think I am).

Looks like your in world scale, when the scale tool comes into play.. click the yellow round button which will put you in local scale. The difference is world scaes based on 0.0.0 (center grid) where local scales based on the orgin of the objects.

You can also click on took settings next to the attribute tab & change the settings to local.

After you scale for thickness on the hood & the bumper, you will find there may be a scale difference or one scale sinks into low & the other doesn't. Click on the vertex on the hood then the vertex on the bumper then click the scale tool & scale them in till they touch. This fixes the scale difference & puts the vertex between both objects into place.
Play with it & see what works for you.

Hm, I did try clicking the yellow round button and moving the edges in both modes. I will try the other things that you mentioned though. I'm starting to wonder if I did something wrong when I modeled the front bumper. The edges on the hood extruded with no problems. Hmm.

No, it's still doing the same thing. I tried both clicking on the yellow button and resetting the tool (and forcing the tool to local mode in the attribute button).

I just tried scaling the edges of the bumper and it does the same thing. One half goes one way, the other half goes the other way.

Does anyone else have any suggestions? I'd like to figure this out so I can keep working on the DVD. At a standstill until I can get it. :/

Edit: The door just extruded correctly. So far the hood and door both extrude correctly and the front fender and front bumper do not extrude properly. Huh!

go to display-> polygon components short normals. The lines perpendicular to the surface will tell you which direction the surface is facing. Make sure all the faces are pointing out of the car (not to the inside).

Half are facing towards the inside, half are facing towards the outside. Now the million dollar question...how do I reverse the ones facing towards the inside? :D

Update: Found the option after a quick search on the forums (I have a bad habit of searching after I ask something...need to break myself of that). Thanks for the headsup on the short normals thing. I will make a note so hopefully it doesn't get me in the future. ;-)
