View Full Version : hip rotation of female in character setup

Hi
I completed the female of the Character Set up kit (Fundamentals). Now I wanted to use her for the Walk Cycle dvd (Basics).
But I am missing the possibility to rotate the hipSway in the set up of the female. The rotation of only the hips in Y is quite important for a realistic walk cycle!

Did I miss anything?? How can I rotate only the hips of the female character?

Thanks for clarifying this,
Lena

oh, and I just saw that the foot of the animo guy in the walk cycle kit is having some more attributes the female doesn't have and that are nowhere explained. I did add the heel pivot the toe pivot and the side to side attributes but how about the raise ball/heel/toe attributes?? Why is this stuff not mentioned in the beginning of the walk cycle training kit when it is actually said that the female character does work for the walk cycle?!

Did I miss any crucial information?
This is frustrating!

Hello, legie. DT actually plans on coming out with a more advanced set up kit similar to the set up of the character in the walk cycle training kit, but better. As for using the female rig to animate the walk cycle with, it can be done with great results. I've animated the walk cycle utilizing that set up and really liked the end product. We were going to use that set up but then wanted to take it a little further to give the user more functionality to get the best results.

Still, DT's latest rigging kit is a great step for learning more advanced rigging techniques and you can still get great results from that rig because I know from personal use.

Sorry, for the inconvenience, legie. Take care.

Hi, if I would add one more joint on top of the hip joint and have that joint effect the hips only in rotation would that work? Or would that interfere with the IK spline of the spine incorrectly?

thanks,
Lena

Hey Lena! Yes, adding another joint above the hip joint would in fact interfere with the IK Spline of the spine. If you wanted to apply the same set up to the female rig that the character in the walk cycle kit has, you would have to do some back-tracking first.

What's back-tracking?

You would need to go back a few steps and set up the rig slightly different.

I agree, I found it really frustrationg thinking the character set up would lead on to the walk cycle. it was pretty easy to sort out the extra foot controls and bin the foot roll, but annoying that i didnt have the hip rotate built in as the animo character.

Im having to twist with the hip control then counter act with the back control..not ideal!

I'm waiting this new training for a long time.
great new to heard DT plan to release it.
I've made a walk cycle with my character setup kit but can't wait to see a kit teaching the rig like animo or body mecanic.

Does it will be released before the new year 2008 ?

Hey guys, i know its been a few years ago this post, but i like to say its true even if you cant find the solution, like Delano said, backtracking helps alot! I was stuck like yourselves, and i went into the scene Amino, and hypergraphed the hipRotate nodes, and bang i saw the answer well sort of. At first it was huge, nodes connecting to nodes, but as i deciphered bit by bit, i managed to create the missing link for the hip rotate to my own character. So even though it took an hour its still great fun opening up the hood in maya and getting real techy with :D

To answer this post heres what i did:

1. Create 2 separate joints and another one, in total 3. so leftHipRotate, rightHipRotate and HipRotateRoot, parent them as you would normally e.g. the way two hips parented to root skeleton.

2. Parent Constrain the hip joints to the hipRotate joints e.g. leftHip > leftHipRotate.etc.

3. Parent Constrain the Back joint (the one above your root joint) to the HipRotateRoot joint.

4. Then create a cluster, and position this in the HipRotateRoot joint, go into insert mode and vertsnap it.

5. Parent Constrain the cluster to HipRotateRoot joint, if can rotate, move this cluster and it moves the joints then its worked, if not then repeat the steps to achieve this.

6. Finally Parent Constrain the cluster to the HipSwayControl, and jackpot! You have successfully created your hipsway control to rotate as well as translate properly.

Hope this helps, sorry im too late :p

Thanks everyone.

Hey, I'm a newbie here and this was my first time coming onto the forums. Just wanted to say thank you so much for explaining this really well. I'm so new and find most of these things really difficult to understand....in fact, the guy should have just written it down while answering the original question instead of talking about the new tutorial. Anyway, thank you again for explaining this really well, even after all these years, they should really add an update or something.
