A faster solution would be to set up mental ray sat. if you are wanting to use mental ray.
Just remember to put all of your files on a shared drive and lauch the render from those shares even on the system you are using to build the scenes.

I use MentalRay Satellite for Maya generally but I'm getting blotched colour back from the satellite/s when using Final Gather. I have tried lots of variation on settings but getting no improvements; with both single frame render in Maya and the Batch rendering. I noticed this evening that there seems to be allot of transfer activity at the start as would be expected. But it seems to take quite a bit longer than I would expect from transferring the same files from one machine to the next manually through the LAN. Your post makes me wonder if your comment about share drives would be the solution perhaps? I wonder because it's almost as though the final gather data on the satellite machines is incorrect or missing etc. and maybe this could be contributed to the distribution of the resources to the satellites.
But I hazard to guess exactly how you set this up via shared disk. I find it very time consuming and hard to tell what's happening when trying things with trial and error regarding this set-up of mine.
Specifically, I use Mac hardware and been monitoring the satellite behaviour during render with Activity Monitor.
Could you please elaborate with some useful detail about this. Others wishing to use it would also find this information useful.
Thanks.

Don't mean to be rude but; Onyone going to offer some help or what?
I am not sure 100% of why this is caused on your end. I would try placing all of the data on a shared drive and then see if that fixes your situation.

Right. And the question is also asked how I do that exactly? What are the ins and outs of this set-up? Are you suggesting using a drive connected to the network independently of the machines doing the rendering? Open the project from this drive and render as per usual? Hope this helps a bit.
Thanks in advance.

Have you tried contacting mental images (http://www.mentalimages.com), the creators of mental ray, about any issues you're having with setting up their product?

I've read all the texts I could find. No mention of the share-disks or what ever that I could see. Will keep looking else where. Thanks for the thoughts tho.

It may not be on their site, but you can subscribe to their newsgroup and ask other mental ray users or even just contact mental images. Basically, you're more likely to find assistance customized to your specific network situation by going that route than you are on a CG forum where people just post in their free time.
But if you're looking for a step-by-step, that can be very time consuming...don't expect it to be free :)

Fair enough. But I was responding to this because something of interest was suggested and I would like some detail from them. It's cool, I'll follow your suggestion. Thanks
