Added this title to my collection and watched it in it's entirety tonight. At first, I was somewhat disappointed. For the first several lessons, it's somewhat of a rehash of material already covered in previous kits. Considering it's a fundamentals kit though, I suppose the coverage of the material is necessary for those not proficient in XSI yet or don't have the luxury of having most of the DT collection sitting on their bookshelf.
That disappointment, however, came to a screeching halt once the discussion turned to the setup of render passes and the power that kind of setup unlocks. The FX-Tree coupled with the passes makes for some amazing capability. The sheer power of that application alone is quite impressive. I'll never use the Depth of Field shader and it's mind-numbing render times again LOL
With that said!
As it is pointed out in the kit, the FX-Tree is only available with the Essentials or Advanced licenses of XSI. The core ideas will work with any compositing software, but the FX-Tree itself is limited to those license types only.
A request of sorts, if I may, would be to let folks know of the license types needed for various training kits. Ergo, if and when you release a fur / hair kit, that functionality is only available in the upper end XSI variants. So far, the kits have pretty much been available to all flavors of XSI, but as they become more advanced and feature focused, the license type might become an issue for some.
Other than that, keep those kits coming ! I find myself going back to them time and time again to recall how something was done.
