Hey guys,
I was recently watching the full body IK video again and i have some questions for those of you that have used it. Will Full body Ik work with a negative foot rig? Will Full body Ik work with added attributes to control figer roll? Will Full body Ik work with facial rigging and blend shapes????? I know this may seem like dumb questions but I would really like to use Full body IK, due to its flexibility and control, and just want to make sure that it will work with everything else.

Thanx,
JeffX

Your questions aren't dumb at all and in fact lots of CG artists would like to know if Full BodyIK is that miracle tool we've all been waiting for. Well, as far as I have learned it is the quickest way to rig your character...rig and ready for animation. However, it doesn't do facial rigging and blendshapes. FullBody IK works on the basis of labeling, as you can see in the FBIK labeling menu, it covers all body parts, including finger roll, except face.
As stated in Maya documentation;
"Instead of using single IK handles per limb, full body IK allows you to translate and rotate your character's body parts with FBIK effectors and have the rest of your character's body follow those movements. For example, if you use FBIK to animate the arm of a biped character reaching down to pick up an object off the floor, your character will bend in a natural way at the waist and knees as you move your character's FBIK hand effectors downward. You can also use FBIK to animate movements such as: a character swinging by its arms from a tree branch, a character doing a handstand, a character's walk cycle, and so on."

Hope that answers your question.

First of all thank you for your reply!!!!

I now realize that FBIK does not do blend shapes, and facial rigging. But can the two be incoporated together??? Specifically, can a figure FBIK also have blendshapes??? If not then it seems that FBIK is only good for backround characters. That would be very sad as it seems to be quite a great way to animate.

Full body IK (FBIK)
Now quickly and easily create natural looking poses and animation for your biped and quadruped characters with the new full body IK (FBIK) in Maya. Maya's full body IK is based on the Alias® HumanIK® solver used in Alias® MotionBuilder. It Makes Maya rigging and Posing Characters Faster, easier and more accurate. The FBX plug-in and file interchange format now allows you to transfer rigged characters animated with FBIK between Maya, 3dsMax and MotionBuilder.

anything is pretty much possible in Maya, just depends how good you are and how much effort you want to put into doing something like an advanced custom FBIK rig.

I do not know much about in Maya's FBIK system. But, in MotionBuilder, you have much animation control like saving various poses, and blendshape, facial animation, retargeting and so on.
I want to know if MAYA has some type of FBIK control like MotionBuilder.
I hope Digital Tutor can answer the following questions.

1) How do you fix those FK IK switch keys (in graph editor) are made by Maya's FBIK system? (I tried to use graph editor in MAYA, but when you try to switch from IK to FK mode, there is a POP key made by MAYA. I 'd like to know how to fix this issue.)

2) Does FBIK in MAYA supports stretchy spine IK? Can you add additional rig set up to Maya’s FBIK? Such as eye joints, scapula joints, tail joints, and so on?

3) How can I make FBIK to stretchy rig? (stretchy arm and leg /stretchy spine)

4) What’s the best joint orientation order in FBIK system?

Well guys I wanted to say thanx for all of the good replies. I have not responded lately because I have been going through the facial rigging and animation series put out By Digital Tutors. I have to say absolutley awesome guys, excellent job, you get an official jeffx, "two thumbs up and a big toe".

Here is an idea..... why not digital tutors put out a tape on FBIK?????

You guys are the ones that introduced me to it at 3 December, so finish up what you started..... I would love to see what you guys could do with it. and I imagine that others would be interested as well. After all have you seen lately how many questions there are on this one issue in this forum???

Is there a way to change the up value of Y to Z for the FBIK setup? I know in the video it says you need to have Y as the up value, but I was wondering if its possible to change that.
