Hy,

I am fairly new to Maya (I'm still learning the learning edition), and I have a question. What is the cheapest Graphics Card that can render? Because every time I try to render ANYTHING, a message pops up and says, "Shadow mapping extensions insufficient to support hardware rendering." It also shows that when I start the program. I can't render anything. If anyone could give me any help, I would greatly appreciate it.

Sincerely,

This depends on what your rendering with, when it comes to rendering with mental ray the things that depend on rendering are your memory and cpu, not the video card, unless your using an opengl card to help speed the rendering of shadow maps. If your doing hardware renders then your card is doing most of the work.

Whats your budget for a new card? Since your just starting you prob dont wanna spend too much money on an expensive quadro card, so I woul recommend getting a highend gamer card. A GeForce 6xxx or 7xxx series card will be more than enough. Of course if money is no object for you, then get a Quadro FX4500 and enjoy.

I can't type about what I have, use, and need in terms of rendering (do to the fact that I have to go), but I will soon. Anyway, thanks.
