Hi

I just want to make a command prompt render from a machine on the network. (A machine that has no dongle, but yet still can be used for rendering.)

However - if i use the Mental Ray command ("render -r mr" ...etc. etc.), it gives me some error-messages + one about licensing Mental Ray. What is that all about? How do i get my MR to work on the network machine.

ps. I am using Maya 8

First thing you need to make sure your maya.rayhosts file is setup on the machine you are sending the render from. I do not know if you can start a render from a machine that is not licensed.

As for the licensing error you will need to create an empty aw.dat file and put it in the flexlm folder on the c:

this will allow for network rendering but will not allow you to open maya.

So something like this.

open notepad.
leave the document empty and save it as aw on your desktop.
This will create an aw.txt file on your desktop.
If you do not see the extention ".txt" then you need to go into:
My Computer->Tools->FolderOptions->View Tab->Uncheck "Hide
extentions for known file types"
Now, ok all the way out and go back to your desktop. You should see the aw.txt file now. Right click and select rename. Now remove the txt and replace it with dat.
Lastly copy this file to the c:\FLEXlm

Again this will only allow you to use the batch render! I do not know if you can start a render from an unlicensed machine.

Lastly go to maya help and search for this. "Submit a job to render over the network"
