I wanted to thank DT for this training. Whenever I want to learn something, I come here first. I don't know if this is the right forum to post this but I just wanted to say that I had so much fun with this; I would recommend it to everyone on here. I learned a ton! Especially on the lighting and rendering side of things. I've been using Maya for a while but working as an editor for the past 5 years left me with very little time to spend with Maya. When I got laid off, I needed a refresher course and I came here. This training was exactly what I needed to bring me back up to speed. I knew next to nothing about lighting or rendering since I spent most of my time animating alone. I'm no longer intimidated by Mental Ray. I can set up studio lighting and I can render out great images. I'm also working faster than before b/c of this workflow. My next step is to put together a spec spot for the headset to put in my reel. I'll upload a link when I'm done. Thanks again DT!

Thanks for the comments guys. I am having a small issue rendering the booleans though; seems that they only render while the camera is close to the geometry as in the images above. If I pull the camera back, the booleans don't render completely. Does that make sense? Anyone experience this before?

Hi abie1,
Try bumping up your anti-aliasing sampling quality in the Render Settings. That should take care of it :)

Hey that did it! I never knew that's how you could control the aliasing. Thanks again.

Okay so I"m having this issue w MR that I hope maybe some of you can shed some light on. MR is either stopping b/c it says it's run out of memory or crashing maya altogether. I'm on an older machine w/ only 1Gig of RAM, P4 HT 3.06. I was digging around the maya help and reading about the BSP setting but I have no idea how to adjust it to fix the issue. I have no clue why this is happening now. I know it's the Headset model though b/c it'll render perfectly if I drop the resolution on the model; as soon as I hit 3 though is when I start to get the crashes and slow downs. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Maybe theres too many faces for your pc... try rendering in draft mode or something like that.
And when you hit 3 it smooth the model so its harder for the Pc but easier than the smooth poly tool.
Try to render with something else MR is hard to handle and crash every time... even if it looks really good with MR
