Let's say I'm modeling something, and I have a bunch of vertices I'm working with, and I want to use the scale tool to move them away from the pivot point equally... is there any way to snap to the grid while you're scaling?

You can scale the mess and select some vertices and snap them. This method will NOT get all of them on the grid line. The only way to get all of the vertices to a grid line or curve is as follow. You can scale the complete mess and then selection some vertices and scale them in X, Or Y or Z, then snap them to the grid or curve whatever axis you chose. Remember to hold down "C" or "X" to make the snap.

select the verticies, go to the scale tool and then press insert. That will let you move the point from which it scales. If you press the blue button, your new 'pivot point' won't change when you change transform tools.

If you mean to scale in Grid Units...
then Yes there is a way.
Go to the Scale Tools "Tool Settings"
(You can get to it through the Modify Drop menu, or via the tool setings button to replace the channel Box)
In it's window select Discrete Scale in order to activate the Relative option box.
Enable it and type in the units you wish the scaling to snap to.
(It is on 1.0 MaYA units by default)
This would enable you to scale snapped to Units...
But to directly scale in order of directly snapping to the grid itself is not a MaYA feature as far as I know.
(Even when you scale by pressing X... what you are actually doing is not snapping to the grid... you are snapping again to 1 MAYA Unit)
Hope this can be of some use to you,
