Setting up the position of joints can be quite hard in places, particularly the fingers and thumbs.
So what I do is select the vertices of the finger joint where the joint should be, set the centre of the mesh to these vertices using Transform -> Move Centre To Vertices.
Then use the match the guide with Transform -> Match Translation to the mesh so the joint is exactly in the middle of the finger or thumb. When you've finished put the centre of the character back to where it was.
Is this a good system to use? I find it's easier and quicker than trying to view things from different angles and guesstimating where the joint should be.
